Recorded in God’s Holy Word is evidence that Jesus can forgive sins, and I am so happy it is recorded for you and me to read and re-read. Many of us remember the story of the friends that let down their crippled friend through the roof of a house. It was then that Jesus said to the crippled man in Mark 2:5 “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” What a powerful and wonderful statement for one to make! A statement that the likes of you and I can not make. Such a statement is sure to start a conversation among those that are near. In verse 7 of Mark 2 we see some of that conversation: “who can forgive sins but God only?” Jesus’ words were preserved that we also would benefit from the lesson he was about to give to those in ear shot of Him that day. Mark 2:8-11 “And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether it is easier to say to the sick of palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.” Jesus is the forgiver of sins, and He had that authority before He ever went to the cross, because He is the God-man.
