A good time to talk to God is when you find yourself in a bargaining frame of mind. Let’s look closer at Jonah 2:9. Like Jonah, I recall times in my life when I said something like God if you will ______ then I will ____. When we try to bargain or strike a deal with God, that is a good indicator that we should be having a heart-to-heart talk with God and not a negotiation session. As you will see Jonah promised among other things to have a voice of thanksgiving, yet we see later he was anything but thankful. Let’s not be hard on Jonah though, as he was at least talking to God, he was just having the wrong conversation as his heart was not yet right. A good time to have a heart to heart with God is when we bargain with God.
