I have to admit Jonah 2:3 does make me chuckle a little bit as I read it (take a second to read it and see if you catch it). Jonah is definitely stating fact here that God was the agent that cast him into the seas. Remember how God caused the sea to rage so this incident had an opportunity to happen (Jonah 1:4)? Do not get me wrong, this is not the part that makes me chuckle. What hits my funny bones ever so slightly (and remember funny bones hurt when agitated) is that Jonah neglects any statement of personal responsibility here. No talk of his refusal to go to Nineveh, of his rebellion, or even the fact that he told the mariners to throw him overboard (Jonah 1:12). His words indicate that it is God’s fault he is in the belly of a fish. The next time we hear ourselves blaming God for some situation in our lives, would be a good time to talk to God, just like Jonah did.
