When I think of fear I sometimes think of fear of the dark, snakes, or spiders. Yet the Bible talks of another type of fear that we would be wise to behold and act accordingly. Genesis 20:11a states “And Abraham said, Because I thougtht, Surely the fear of God is not in this place”. If we would discern properly if others around us fear God and then act appropriately we would do much better.
In this Biblical account Abraham correctly discerned that the rulers did not fear God. What he failed to do was rely on God for his protection. Abraham did not ask God for direction, instead he ordered his wife to tell a half truth. While he was wise is discerning, he was not wise in action.
Will we discern and act wisely? Or will we discern well and miss the application? Discerning that those around us fear not God, should be a good indication that we need to be in prayer asking for guidance.
