I have heard that some churches and missionaries are seeing a decrease in giving. This decrease is being attributed to the economic downturn. Yet, I do not think that all our decrease is due to an economic downturn as some outreaches are receiving record high giving. The difference I think is from the heart, while some decrease in giving is directly tied to the economy the other is tied to the heart. When it comes to economic giving I think of Paul’s letter to the Philippians in Philippians 4:10 which states “But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.”
If the economic times has you unable to give to your missionaries or outreaches it is understood. Paul learned to be content whether he had or he lacked. Now comes the fun part, when you are able again remember those missionaries at home and abroad. You could cause them to rejoice as Paul did. Let’s give our missionaries a real Paul experience! You might even want to include Philippians 4:10 in with you gift to them.
