Have you ever been in a conversation that was not pleasant, edifying, and encouraging? The kind of conversation that brings out the worst in people? I have. At those times it seems as though a million different responses go through my head at lightening speed. If I am successful at managing my thoughts, none of those thoughts leave my lips to be heard by all. If I am not successful, at least one of those thoughts leave my lips that was not edifying, encouraging, and helpful. When this happens someone gets hurt. The Bible shows us that we can gauge our walk with Christ by listening to a tape recorder of the words we say.
To understand what I am saying we need to turn to James 1:26 which states “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.” If we were to tape all our conversations for a day, week, or month and listen to them; would we find our religion (our walk with Christ) to be in vain on the basis of this verse? Are our tongues bridled? Are they under control? If I claim to be a Christian and do not control what I say, then I would want to check my Christianity according to this verse. Do you need a check up?
